  • about us

Angela was born in a family of hoteliers, living and working in and around hotels all her life. Olivier found his vocation for the hospitality sector by working in restaurants and bars after college. Having decided to pursue a career within the industry, Olivier chose to study hotel management. This is where we met, 13 ago, at the world renowned Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland.

Following our studies, we pursued our respective professional careers within the sector by working in some of Europe’s leading hotels. However, we had always harboured the dream of one day owning our own small boutique guest house. So, in 2012 we decided to put our combined knowledge and skills to the benefit of a personal project. Trevose Harbour House is the fruit of our passion and a reflection of the kind of place we would like to stay in. A living place which is understated yet uniquely stylish and which offers high standards of service in a relaxed and comfortable way.

    Trevose Harbour House

    — an exciting new coastal retreat!

Trevose Harbour House forms part of a picturesque terrace in the heart of bustling St. Ives, nestled between magnificent golden beaches and a vibrant restaurant and art gallery scene.

The property was lovingly restored over 2 years and reopened in spring 2013 as a tasteful and charming boutique guesthouse. Six individually designed bedrooms echoing the surf and sky colours of St. Ives Bay await you. Most of our rooms enjoy sweeping views of the harbour.

Our aspiration is to offer our guests a warm welcome, impeccable service and a mouthwatering breakfast. Combined with a stylish coastal setting and whispers of retro and mid-century design, Trevose Harbour House is the ideal place to relax, unwind and explore all that Cornwall has to offer.

We look forward to welcoming you!

    Delan Cookson

    x

Delan Cookson was born in 1937. After training at Bournemouth College of art under David Ballantyne and the Central School of Art, London, under Harding Green, he went on to work for Ruth Duckworth at Kew in 1956.
In the early 1960s he started to teach at the High Wycombe College of Higher Education in Buckinghamshire, and continued to do so for no less than twenty-eight years. The family then moved to St Buryan, a charming village not far from Land's End in Cornwall. Here he was able to build a large workshop where he could pursue a full-time occupation as a potter using his own equipment on his own premises. After fourteen successful years near the toe of Cornwall he moved to Hayle, possibly the most important English town during the industrial revolution. Hayle copper-work was a product of the Arts and Crafts movement, and is now keenly sought by collector's. Delan's workshop overlooks Hayle Estuary; one of the most peaceful locations you could wish to find. He uses two electric kilns to fire his work which is now exclusively in porcelain.
He speaks of his potting career as being divided into three distinct periods. The first he calls 'hard edge'; cylindrical, conical and spherical shapes that were thrown and turned. The second - a very interesting period - was concerned with the relationship of 'hard' and 'soft'. These sculptural pieces often portrayed mechanical equipment squashing or extruding something soft or delicate; a large press, for instance, squeezing a jelly. These pieces were large and hand-built from slabbed stoneware. The third and current period is finely thrown porcelain vases, bottles and bowls. He is most widely known nowadays for his brilliant clear blue glaze; a barium/lithium recipe with a small amount of copper carbonate to produce the blue colour. It is semi-translucent and is sprayed so that varying thickness can be achieved to give greater or lesser depth of colour and allowing the white porcelain body to add brilliance to the finished pot. Although a popular speciality, the blue is only one of Delan's favourites. He is currently producing a very attractive pink and dark grey combination using nickel, and plain white with fine decoration in dark cobalt blue. The pots are fired at 1200° C. Delan's work is sold mainly in St Ives and exhibited widely.

    Emma Williams

    x

Born in 1968, Emma Williams trained in textile design at Huddersfield University. She worked as a freelance textile designer before becoming a full time artist in 1997. Emma has exhibited widely throughout England and Ireland and her works can be found in many private collections including Norwich Union, Paintings for Hospitals and St James’ Hospital, Dublin.

"My paintings are textured and always vivid - evoking memories of a time space and mood. My many visits to Cornwall have been a constant source of inspiration, influencing my particular approach to interiors and landscapes. Colour and decorative qualities combined with flattened perspective play an essential role in creating rich images."

    x

Melanie Uys works from her studio at Uys Gallery in St Ives. She was trained at Falmouth and Exeter Schools of Art, graduating in 1995 with a BA (Hons) in Art and Art History.

    Alexandra Dickens

    x

After a successful modelling career in London and New York, Alexandra moved to St Ives in 1995 and soon after opened her gallery which is nestled amongst the old fishermen cottages. All her work, whether inspired by dramatic moments in nature, an element of landscape, a glimpsed seascape or purely unchecked creativity, reflects her ardent passion for painting. Her use of colour and the variety of techniques employed not only capture the movement and texture but also the ever changing coastal light of Cornwall. Alexandra’s work is about distilling an idea, a sensation, evoking a feeling of a place rather than a depiction of it. Original and distinctive, Alexandra’s vibrant abstracts resonate with energy and her powerful but tonally subtle paintings are full of texture and depth representative of the surrounding rugged landscape.

Alexandra’s paintings were first exhibited in New York in 1984 and since then she has been commissioned to produce paintings for many private individuals as well as undertaking corporate commissions including 150 paintings for Excel in London Docklands.

Not to mention the numerous art galleries, workshops and studios worth visiting that are scattered amongst the delightful streets and alleyways of the town.

    Art at trevose

Being located in the artistic town of St Ives meant that we had to find a way to exhibit local artwork within the Guest House. We were absolutely thrilled when local artists were also keen to feature some of their work at Trevose Harbour House. The well illuminated white walls at the house are the perfect backdrop to showcase the carefully selected pieces of art and pottery. As with everything in the house, the brief was white and blue and the pieces needed to tie into their surrounding context - we couldn't be happier with the outcome! We are currently featuring the below artists. For information on the artist, prices or their gallery feel free to ask us.

    Passion for
    produce

Where possible we will endeavour to source organic or local produce and support sustainable farming, ensuring that only the freshest and finest ingredients make it to your breakfast table, keeping food miles as low as possible. And because we respect our produce and the planet, we also champion an ethical approach to cooking by limiting wastage and recycling packaging.

    passion for product

Most of what you see in the house is either upcycled or recycled and besides the added benefit of sustainability, we think the furniture brings something unique and extra special to Trevose Harbour House! Both our cleaning products and in-room amenities are eco- friendly and all our print material is done with eco-inks on recycled paper.

    passion for people

At Trevose Harbour House, we believe that sustainability doesn’t stop at what we source and think that it is also vital to support the local economy and community, from the people we employ to local charities. We know that we have a long way to go over the next few years and hope to support some noteworthy projects and to gain some accreditations.

    FINDING TREVOSE HARBOUR HOUSE
by car | By train | By air

The M5 and M6 (south bound) lead to the South Country. From Exeter, follow the A30 until you meet the A3074 towards St Ives. The road is mainly dual carriageway. As you arrive in St. Ives along The Terrace, you will see the bus station on your right. Turn right down Station Hill and Trevose Harbour House’s rear entrance will be found a little further down on the left. You can momentarily stop the car and buzz down to reception for assistance to unload your suitcases. We have a few private car spaces that can be booked at the Station Car Park on a first-come first-serve basis at a cost of £7.50 per day. Once your vehicle is parked, you can choose to walk a few minutes along the panoramic alley of ‘The Warren’ to the main entrance of Trevose Harbour House. We do not recommend putting our postcode in your Sat Nav as it will bring you down a very steep alley along ‘The Warren’ where you are unable to park your car.

There is good service from most major cities. From the mainline Penzance service, exit at St. Erth Station for the St. Ives branch line which takes approximately 10 minutes. From the train station, we are a short panoramic stroll along ‘The Warren’ to the main entrance of Trevose Harbour House. Alternatively, a taxi can be booked from St Erth to the hotel, which should cost around £5-10.

Newquay airport is about 45 minutes away and has regular flights from many UK cities. Exeter airport is about 2 hours away and has some flights from overseas too that arrive there. From the airport, we recommend that you hire a car or book a transfer/taxi service.
